The Chicago sweet steak is a Midwestern classic sandwich made with rib-eye steak and onions that are spiced and seared to perfection. To that you add a decadent red sauce and pepper to create Chicago’s own sweet steak sandwich, enjoy.
Chicago Sweet Steak
Ingredients
- 1-2 lbs thin cut Rib-eye Steak
- 1/2 yellow onion diced
- 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp Kosher Salt
- Hoagie rolls
- American Cheese slices(2 per sandwich)
- Sweet peppers for garnish
For Sweet Sauce:
- 1 16-19oz bottle Texas BBQ Sauce (or your favorite)
- 1/3 cup sweet chili sauce
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 3/4 cup orange/pineapple juice
- 1 quarter of an onion, green pepper diced and 1 garlic clove minced
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- Sweet peppers
Directions
- To start your sweet sauce heat oil in a saucepan. Add garlic, onion, and green pepper. Saute for 2-3 minutes.
- Add BBQ sauce, sweet chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and orange/pineapple juice. Mix well and let simmer.
- Bring cast iron griddle or large skillet to medium high heat, add oil.
- Once hot add steak and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Season with Kosher salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Flip and cook another 2 minutes.
- Flip once more and chop with your meat cleaver. Add diced onion and mix.
- Cut open hoagie rolls and steam it.
- Place American Cheese over steak and let melt.
- Cover with steamed hoagie roll then carefully scoop in steak and flip.
- Top with sweet sauce and sweet peppers.
